During MWC 2017, we had the opportunity to speak with Rick Osterloh, the head of hardware at Google. Since he took a huge part in the release of such smartphones as Pixel and Pixel XL, we decided to ask him about their successor: Google Pixel 2. He told us two specific details about the upcoming device: it really will arrive this year and it will remain premium Device. This means that Pixel was not just a one-time trial, and there would not be an inexpensive option for their expensive flagship.
The 8-megapixel front camera with 1.4-micron pixels has f / 2.4 aperture. The results are excellent for self-module without autofocus.
During the announcement Google decided to emphasize the outstanding photographic capabilities of Pixel 2 reference to the DxOMark rating, where the device scored 89 points, leading the table. This caused a mixed reaction among a thinking audience that remembers how DxOMark wrote Sony Xperia’s laudatory odes (we do know how lousy Xperia is actually shooting, is not it?). Nevertheless, Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are really cool, but it is too early to return a credit of trust, because they screwed up with Xperia in its entirety.
The main Pixel 2 module uses the Sony Ericsson IMX378 12.3-megapixel sensor with a 1.5 / 1 “pixel size, f / 2.0, the flash is double (single-color), laser and phase autofocus are available. Among them: preset white balance, several types of grids, fixing the point of focus / metering, adjusting the exposure of the slider. The default mode is Auto HDR +, but you can turn it off or activate the enhanced HDR + mode (when exiting the program Auto HDR + will turn on again.)
Pixel 2 phones would be available with 32 and 128 GB of memory, and an advanced camera will certainly motivate many for active shooting and for some users it will not be an issue to fill even 128 GB. Do not worry about the lack of support for microSD. Just turn on Auto Backup in Google Photos and all your photos will automatically be uploaded to the server. If the phone suddenly runs out of space, the program can delete old photos, whose copies are already uploaded to the Network.
If Google plans to adhere to the annual release cycle, as suggested by Osterlow, we will probably see that Google Pixel 2 will be available in October 2017. Google will continue to charge high prices, as Apple does with the iPhone. Therefore, the future model is likely to surpass the prices of Pixel and Pixel XL, which will come out with 649 dollars and 769 dollars respectively.
